There exists a familiar sense around the Bengals following their flat, uninspired, beat-down loss at the hands of the Baltimore Ravens Sunday: Now what?
More of the same is coming Sunday in the home opener from the Tennessee Titans, a team cut from the same mold as the Ravens. Tennessee will run straight at the Bengals and hit them in the mouth. Will the Bengals be willing or able to punch back? The Ravens had just two sacks of Carson Palmer but hit him five more times and pressured him all afternoon in the 17-10 decision. The Titans had seven sacks in their upset of Jacksonville in Week 1.
The Titans defeated Jacksonville 17-10 and rushed for 137 yards and held the Jaguars to 33. The Titans also collected seven sacks.
"A little different (than the Ravens) but very physical, aggressive up front -- that's important," coach Marvin Lewis said Monday. "They'll get after you, and they rotate some guys up front. Defensively, they are very, very strong and aggressive up front. A good football team defensively. Offensively, they can run the football effectively. They (have) two fine backs (LenDale White and rookie Chris Johnson)."
Lewis offered no specifics on what ails his team or how it can or would be fixed.
"It stayed the same yesterday. It didn't change yesterday. We had the inability to move it around. I thought we did some really good things in the running game; we did some things that weren't very good," Lewis said. "They jumped around us, jumped under us and did some things movement-wise that were a little unconventional. But we've got to block them off. We've been there before. That group, those five guys (Levi Jones, Andrew Whitworth, Eric Ghiaciuc, Bobbie Williams and Stacy Andrews) played a lot of football together last year.
"We've got one new guy in the front at the tight end position (Ben Utecht) and a new fullback (Daniel Coats) at times. We spread it around -- we spread it to receiver, we spread it to quarterback. We spread it around. We've got to do a better job with recognition of those things and being where we need to be. We kind of got off to a slow start with it, very similar to last year: We got off to a slow start, and we found a way to get it right. We've got to do the same thing."
