Cincinnati Bengals Inside Slant 2008-12-10
Quarterback Carson Palmer and coach Marvin Lewis can't seem to get their stories straight about the immediate future of the Bengals' star and the condition of his right elbow.

Lewis, agitated by continuing questions about the conflicting information coming out about the health of Palmer's right elbow, said Monday there is "no indication (Palmer) needs surgery."

"Every indication from every football orthopedist is he does not need surgery," Lewis said.

Lewis said there is still a chance Palmer would play this season. But when asked if he had ruled Palmer out for Sunday's game against the Redskins, Lewis said, "Yes and no. ... There's not much chance of him playing this week. It's unlikely."

Palmer has said the tendon and ligament in his throwing elbow have detached from the bone.

"You'd like to have it sooner than later," Lewis said of surgery. "But the plan is not to have surgery. He's not 100 percent cleared yet."

Palmer's health dominated Lewis' Monday afternoon news conference. What else is there to really talk about with a team that is 1-11-1 with a coach who doesn't often answer questions candidly?

Question: How important is it that (Carson) Palmer plays this season?

Lewis: "I don't know if you can put an importance on it. I don't think there is an answer to that question."

Question: Why not shut him do for the season and ...

Lewis: "Because he would like an opportunity to play. If he is healthy and well that's what he'll do, play football."

Question: Will you look for him to play at Kansas City (Dec. 28)?

Lewis: "I don't know. I don't know if you look for him to go for Cleveland or Kansas City, but we'll see as we go through the week, but he is doing well."

Question: Is the final test when he tries to cut loose with it?

Lewis: "He has been cutting loose with it, it just a matter of keeping things going. That is what an NFL quarterback does, so he'll be ready when he doesn't have any of those issues."
