Cincinnati Bengals Notes, Quotes 2009-03-27
--During the league meetings, the Bengals were awarded four compensatory draft picks in next month's draft (one in the third, one in the sixth and two in the seventh). That gives the Bengals 11 picks in the draft, their most since 2004.

The Bengals have had some relative success with their compensatory picks the past couple years. Wide receiver Andre Caldwell was taken in the third round last year while starting safety Chinedum Ndukwe was a seventh-round compensatory pick in 2007.

--Linebacker Brandon Johnson was the team leader in performance-based pay with $204,427. Johnson played in all 16 games and started the last nine after Keith Rivers was lost for the season with a broken jaw. He finished second on the team in tackles with 112. He was one of nine players to earn over $100,000 under the system.

Other Bengals players earning over $100,000 are Rashad Jeanty ($182,610), Chinedum Ndukwe ($164,495), Marvin White ($156,771), David Jones ($151,619), Kyries Hebert ($149,227), Daniel Coats ($128,564), Nate Livings ($123,885) and Chris Crocker ($107,801).

--QB Carson Palmer recorded messages for season ticket holders either thanking them for renewing their tickets or reminding them that the March 31 deadline is drawing close. However it was the last sentence of that message which has raised the eyebrows of some.

"So I wanted you to know that we appreciate your loyalty to our team, and I will do anything I can to make the Bengals a season surprise Super Bowl team," Palmer says in the message.

--While Steelers coach Mike Tomlin is calling Baltimore the team to beat in the AFC North, Bengals coach Marvin Lewis is still going with Pittsburgh.

"Got to start with the Steelers. Baltimore had an exciting team last year and they played hard. They're going to be ready to go," Lewis said. "I think Cleveland had a season they were disappointed how they played, but they brought in a new coach who is going to tweak what they do. We'll be playing uphill."

QUOTE OF NOTE: "It's hard for me to get inside his mind and figure things out." -- Coach Marvin Lewis on if he had talked to Chad Ocho Cinco lately and what he might be thinking.
