Cincinnati Bengals Notes, Quotes 2008-10-17

Cincinnati Bengals Notes, Quotes 2008-10-17
--After six games, and despite an 0-6 record, the Bengals are getting significantly improved play from their defense. They are ranked 16th at 324.2 yards a game, after finishing 28th, 30th and 27th the past three seasons. Cincinnati allowed a season-low 252 net yards last week at the Jets, and the defense produced the game's first score early in the first quarter, when defensive end Antwan Odom sacked Brett Favre and forced a fumble, which was recovered by safety Chinedum Ndukwe and returned 15 yards for a touchdown.

It was the second time this season the defense has forced a turnover on the opposition's first series, and also the second time the defense has scored. Against the Jets, the defense also had a season-high two interceptions -- from safeties Marvin White and Corey Lynch.

"The defense has been giving us chances and decent field position," quarterback Carson Palmer said after the Jets game, in which he did not play because of an inflamed throwing elbow. "And whether it's been me or Ryan (Fitzpatrick) at quarterback, we haven't taken advantage of it. If we wore down a little on defense today, a big part of that

could be how long we left them on the field in the first quarter."

The Cincinnati offense had only 2:39 of possession time in the first quarter, failing to make a first down. The Jets held the ball for 12:21.

--Last season's Pittsburgh visit to Paul Brown Stadium saw an all-time Bengals record attendance of 66,188. It edged out a franchise mark of 66,113 which had been set earlier in the year against New England.

--Cincinnati Mayor Mark Mallory urged Bengals fans and Cincinnatians to support the 0-6 Bengals on Sunday against Pittsburgh, which travels thousands of fans. At his weekly meeting with the media, Mallory said he will be tailgating before the game and told the news media several times at his weekly briefing Tuesday that it is very important that Cincinnatians support their team. "No room for negotiations," he said.

--Wide receiver Chad Ocho Cinco, who averaged 80 receptions in his first seven NFL seasons, is struggling through his least productive year. He has 19 receptions for 216 yards and just one touchdown.

Ocho Cinco talked Wednesday to reporters that cover the Steelers in a conference call. Asked about his offseason of discontent, Ocho Cinco related it to his poor numbers.

"I really do not wish to relive that situation. I think that may be part of why my production is down this year," he said. "To rant and rave in the offseason like that and then come back and expect to be productive, or to expect them to use me the same way that they used me in the past, is very unlikely.

"That is like me talking about you guys in a negative way and then coming back and expecting to be your No. 1 fan or expecting you to be my No. 1 fan. Right now, I made my bed and I have to live in it. I apologized about it a million times to my team, my organization and my fans. I think that I am playing this year is probably deserving. There is nothing wrong with me, but it is probably (deserved) because of my actions in the offseason; it is like somewhat of a punishment. When you open your mouth, this is what you get; I understand that. When opportunities come, I am going to make the plays."

BY THE NUMBERS: 32 and 16 -- NFL rankings after six games for the Bengals offense (32) and defense (16), a major role reversal from previous seasons.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "We have professionals in the locker room. We can't dwell on what happened the first six games. If we're 1-6, it's going to be a great feeling." -- QB Ryan Fitzpatrick, who will start Sunday against the Steelers for the third time because of Carson Palmer's elbow injury.
