Cincinnati Bengals Notes, Quotes 2008-10-30

Cincinnati Bengals Notes, Quotes 2008-10-30
--Keith Rivers didn't threaten wide receiver Hines Ward on Wednesday, but it's clear the Bengals rookie linebacker will be looking for No. 86 the next time he faces the Steelers.

"I mean, I would have (done) it," Rivers said of the block put on him by Ward.

The Bengals will play Nov. 20 at Pittsburgh in the rematch of the 38-10 defeat.

"If I was able to, if I was able to, if I didn't go on (season-ending injured reserve), I'd do everything in my will -- shoot some cortisone in my face and I'll go," he said. Ward has not spoken to Rivers. But Ward did send a text message to Chad Ocho Cinco to share with Rivers.

"Hines doesn't mean to be cheap," Ocho Cinco said. "They try to call him a dirty player, but he plays the game like a defensive player. No receiver who plays the game plays as violently as Hines."

Rivers had 50 tackles and one interception. He was injured early in the seventh game against the Steelers.

"I thought I'd just lost a tooth or something," he said. "My mouth was sore. I didn't know I broke my jaw until I got the X-rays, and they said it was broken in two places."

His jaw has been wired shut for a week. He has seven more weeks to go until rubber bands replace the wiring. Until then he is on a liquid diet -- soup and shakes.

He has lost 12 pounds and is down to about 225.

--The Bengals' next game, following 0-4 showings in September and October, is in November. Good thing for them; in five seasons under Lewis, the Bengals are 14-7 in November.

--The Bengals, after losing Sunday at Houston, are 0-8 for the fifth time in franchise history. The 2008 Bengals now join the 1978, 1991, 1993 and 1994 editions of the Bengals at 0-8. The 1993 Bengals had the worst start in the 41-season history of the Cincinnati franchise at 0-10.

Bill Johnson was fired as coach in 1978 after an 0-5 start. Homer Rice replaced him and was 4-7 overall. Sam Wyche coached the 1991 Bengals, and Dave Shula was the coach of the 1993 and 1994 teams.

--The Bengals (0-8) and Lions (0-7) are the NFL's only winless teams.

--The Bengals offensive line has played poorly all season. But it was better Sunday. In allowing one more sack to Houston, the line has allowed 27 sacks in eight games, 10 more than the franchise-record low of 17 in all of the 2007 season.

--The Bengals have been outscored 73-16 in the past two games. In the second halves of the past two games, the Bengals have allowed 49 points and scored just three. In the past two games, the Bengals have given up six touchdown passes and have just one.

--The Bengals are 2-11 in their past 13 road games.

--In 486 minutes and 21 seconds of play this season, which includes the overtime at the Giants in Week 3, the Bengals have led for just 43 minutes and 20 seconds.

--The Bengals signed fullback J.D. Runnels to the practice squad. He is a third-year NFL player and former sixth-round pick by the Chicago Bears in 2006.

BY THE NUMBERS: 7-20 -- Bengals record in their past 27 games, dating back to the three-game losing streak at the end of the 2006 season.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Honestly, whatever. It is what it is. You know. You reap what you sow; that's what happens. What goes around comes around. We'll see what happens ... and that's all there is to it." -- Bengals rookie LB Keith Rivers, on the block by Steelers WR Hines Ward that broke Rivers' jaw in two places and ended his season.
