Cincinnati Bengals Strategy and Personnel 2008-11-12

--QB Carson Palmer (right elbow) is out for the Eagles game Sunday. He will not practice this week.

--QB Ryan Fitzpatrick will make his fifth consecutive start and sixth of the season.

--WR Andre Caldwell (foot) and WR Jerome Simpson (ankle) are working out this week but are not expected to play Sunday, head coach Marvin Lewis said.

--RB Cedric Benson, in his three starts, has rushed 51 times for 205 yards, an average per carry of more than 4 yards.

--DT Jason Shirley was not at practice Monday, coach Marvin Lewis said. According to the Fresno Bee, Shirley remained in California, where he is facing trial on DUI-related charges from 2007.

PASSING OFFENSE: D -- The Bengals have been without Carson Palmer for five games, and they have seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Most damaging has been the poor pass protection, which has given up 30 sacks. Ryan Fitzpatrick has fumbled six times and lost four on sacks.

RUSHING OFFENSE: D-minus -- Chris Perry has been benched and has not had one rushing attempt in the past three games. Cedric Benson has rushed 51 times for 204 yards in his three starts. The offensive line has not blocked well in the run game. The Bengals have just four rushing touchdowns in nine games.

PASS DEFENSE: D -- Though opponents have a 92.6 passer rating with 13 touchdowns and just five interceptions against them, the Bengals secondary has played well. The problem has been the pass rush that has registered just nine sacks and put little pressure on opposing quarterbacks.

RUSH DEFENSE: D -- The Bengals are improving against the run, and they ranked 24th after nine weeks, allowing 138.1 yards per game. The loss of rookie OLB Keith Rivers (jaw) has hurt, but rookie Pat Sims has provided some hope against the run when he has lined up in the middle of the defense with fellow DT Domata Peko.

SPECIAL TEAMS: C -- K Shayne Graham and KR Glenn Holt have been the stars of the kicking game. Graham is perfect on PATs and is 11-for-12 on field goals. Holt has a 25.3-yard average on 34 kickoff returns. The Bengals have an almost 2-yard edge in average kickoff returns for and against (24.6 to 23). Kyle Larson has had a lot of work (51 punts in nine games) and has been inconsistent.

COACHING: D -- Coach Marvin Lewis' team has continued to play hard. Defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer is making strides with his unit. Offensive coordinator Bob Bratkowski's group is now just starting to show signs of life. Despite reports and speculation nationwide that Lewis is on the coaching hot seat, he is not. He will finish this season and the remaining two years of his contract (through the 2010 season).
