The Bengals Wednesday signed free-agent linebacker Jim Maxwell to the roster. He played in three games for the Bengals in 2007. He was released by the Bengals on Aug. 30 and has not previously been on an NFL roster this regular season.

GAME PLAN: The Browns are a surprising plus-9 in turnover differential, good for third best in the NFL. The Bengals get themselves in a lot of trouble when they kick the ball around. ... The Bengals are winless in seven games this season on the road and are 2-15 in their last 17 road games. ... Cleveland is ripe against the run, floundering at 28th in the league at 147.4 yards a game. The Bengals are coming off their second-best run game of the season in the victory against Washington.

MATCHUPS TO WATCH: Bengals RB Cedric Benson vs. Browns rush defense. Cincinnati is coming off its second-best rush game of the season against Washington. Their two victories have been their top two rushing games this season. The Bengals have a chance to move the ball on the Browns, who are allowing 147.4 yards a game. The Bengals had just 69 rushing yards in their Week 4 loss to the Browns in Cincinnati. The game figures to be a low-scoring matchup. The Bengals are last and the Browns 28th in scoring in the league. The Browns are 28th in first downs gained with 212, and the Bengals are 29th with 210. The Browns have gone 16 consecutive quarters without an offensive touchdown. The Bengals snapped a streak of 11 quarters without a touchdown of any sort last week against Washington.

Browns QB Ken Dorsey vs. Bengals pass defense. The Browns are working with their third starting quarterback of the season in Ken Dorsey. Derek Anderson, who started in the 20-12 Cleveland victory in Week 4, is gone for the season, so is wunderkind Brady Quinn. The Browns have the 29th-ranked pass offense in the NFL; the Bengals are 30th. Wide receiver Braylon Edwards is Cleveland's leading receiver with just 50 receptions, but he has an impressive 16.7-yard average with three touchdowns. Tight end Kellen Winslow has 43 receptions for a 10-yard average. The Bengals have mounted no serious pass rush this season with just 13 sacks. The Browns have done a good job of protecting their quarterbacks with just 18 sacks given up.

INJURY IMPACT: The Bengals are getting healthier than in previous weeks, though there could be some concern at left tackle, where Levi Jones appears to be out for a fifth consecutive game and rookie Anthony Collins -- the starter in the past four -- did not practice Wednesday because of a knee injury.
