REPORT CARD VS. CHIEFS
PASSING OFFENSE: B -- Ryan Fitzpatrick was efficient and did not turn the ball over. Without starters Chad Ocho Cinco and T.J. Houshmandzadeh, the Bengals threw to eight receivers, led by rookie Andre Caldwell, who had five catches. The Bengals allowed just one sack.
RUSHING OFFENSE: A -- Cedric Benson put together a second consecutive 100-yard game (25 carries for 111 yards), the first time a Bengals tailback has done that since Rudi Johnson in December 2005. Benson, heading into free agency, now appears to be a priority for the team to re-sign. He fits in well with the run scheme. The offensive line played well for another week against a weak Kansas City run defense.
PASS DEFENSE: B -- Not until late in the game did Kansas City begin moving the ball. The Bengals had just one sack, but QB Tyler Thigpen could not get comfortable in the pocket.
RUSH DEFENSE: A -- The Bengals held the Chiefs, who ran a mere 15 times, to 31 rushing yards. The Chiefs were, by choice, one-dimensional as a pass offense. Dhani Jones had a tackle for loss, forced fumble and fumble recovery on a Kansas City run play.
SPECIAL TEAMS: B -- The Bengals recovered a last-ditch onside kick. Shayne Graham made all three field goals in what might have been his last game with the team; he will be an unrestricted free agent. The coverage units were well-coached under Darrin Simmons. CB Leon Hall was a willing and aggressive punt return man in place of the injured T.J. Houshmandzadeh.
COACHING: B -- Marvin Lewis' Bengals never quit, winning their last three. Several young players were well-prepared to assume new roles because of injuries. The defense could be the star of this team in years to come under coordinator Mike Zimmer. The offensive staff has a lot of work to do to make its last-ranked unit viable again. The Bengals moved the ball well against the Chiefs all day and came within 2:20 of pitching the first consecutive shutouts in franchise history. Don't look for many, if any, changes on the staff this offseason.
