League: Pacman is back Goodell confirms Jones can return to practice Monday
NOTEBOOK

The NFL confirmed yesterday that suspended cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones can rejoin the Dallas Cowboys on Monday and can play again Dec. 7 against Pittsburgh - but only if he stays on his best behavior.

Commissioner Roger Goodell issued a brief statement confirming the details of Jones' return, noting that it can only happen "if he avoids any further incidents and fully complies with each and every condition that has been established for him."

Those conditions were not outlined, although it's believed he must keep up with the aftercare of the alcohol rehabilitation program he underwent since being suspended Oct. 14.

The statement also noted that "Commissioner Goodell's decision was based on the recommendations of clinical experts."

Jones was suspended from the entire 2007 season because of repeated run-ins with the law. Traded to Dallas and given another chance by Goodell, Jones played six games before getting punished again. By missing the next two games, this will become a six-game penalty, making it 22 of a possible 28 games he'll have been forced to sit out.

* Redskins: RB Clinton Portis was limited in practice yesterday with his sprained knee and is listed as questionable for tomorrow's game against the Seahawks.

Coach Jim Zorn said Portis will be a game-time decision, although Portis has given every indication he will play. He ran for 68 yards on 15 carries in last week's game against the Cowboys despite not practicing at all.

WR Antwaan Randle El is also questionable with a sprained ankle.

* Bills: Starting safety Donte Whitner and starting cornerback Jabari Greer won't play when Buffalo travels to Kansas City to play the Chiefs tomorrow.

Whitner, who missed the second half of Buffalo's Monday night loss to Cleveland, is nursing a right shoulder separated against the Jets on Nov. 2. Greer hurt his right knee in the Browns game.

Buffalo's defensive secondary might be even further depleted if Whitner's replacement, Bryan Scott, can't play. Scott is questionable because of a left knee injury sustained against the Browns.

* Titans: Tennessee is short-handed at cornerback heading into tomorrow's game with the Jets.

The Titans were already without Eric King, who broke his forearm last week against Jacksonville, and will be without Reynaldo Hill (hip) and perhaps starter Nick Harper (foot), who is listed as doubtful.

* 49ers offensive coordinator Mike Martz has been fined $20,000 by the NFL for his criticism of the officiating at the end of the 49ers' 29-24 loss in Arizona on Nov. 10.

Also fined were Vikings DE Ray Edwards, who will lose $25,000 for two hits against Tampa Bay last Sunday, and Titans WR Brandon Jones ($15,000 for excessive celebration after a touchdown).

* Bears: WR Marty Booker will miss the game at St. Louis tomorrow because of a knee injury.

In his second stint with the Bears after spending the past four seasons with Miami, Booker has just 11 receptions for 183 yards and two touchdowns and has not caught a pass the past three games.

* Bengals: Starting CB Johnathan Joseph will miss the rest of the season with a foot injury.

The team placed Joseph on injured reserve, the third defensive starter lost to injury this season after linebacker Keith Rivers and safety Dexter Jackson.

* Michael Vick is back in Virginia to plead guilty to state dogfighting charges, a move he hopes will expedite his return to society and, eventually, pro Football.

The former Atlanta Falcons quarterback is being held in protective custody at the Hopewell Regional Jail, superintendent Darnley Hodge said yesterday. Vick arrived Thursday afternoon from the federal penitentiary in Leavenworth, Kan., where he's serving a 23-month sentence for a dogfighting conspiracy conviction.

Vick, 28, is due to appear Tuesday in Surry County Circuit Court, where he's expected to plead guilty to two felony counts in a deal with prosecutors that calls for a suspended sentence and probation.
