CINCINNATI - He blasted off on a couple of end-around plays. He took a direct snap from center in the "Wildcat" formation and ran to daylight. He also made some tough catches in traffic.
Rookie wide receiver Andre Caldwell stepped into the spotlight and performed like a veteran in the Bengals' 16-6 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs at Paul Brown Stadium on Sunday, Dec. 28.
Filling in admirably for Chad Ocho Cinco and T.J. Houshmandzadeh, who were deactivated with hamstring and back soreness, respectively, Caldwell accounted for 100 all-purpose yards - 49 rushing, 34 receiving and 17 on a kickoff return.
"I showed that I can play, be a starter, contribute to the team and make plays," said Caldwell, a third-round draft pick from Florida. "If my number is called, I'm going to make the play.
"I don't think the stage is too big. I think the SEC and the Florida coaches prepared me well. They got me ready for the NFL, and I'm out there strong, and when I get the ball, I'm ready."
Sunday marked only the seventh game of the season for Caldwell, whose progress was slowed by a pair of foot injuries, including a stress fracture against Pittsburgh (Oct. 19) that kept him sidelined for three weeks.
He returned to action at Pittsburgh (Nov. 20) and eventually wrestled the kickoff return job away from Glenn Holt. Caldwell saved his best performance for the season finale.
"I haven't sat on the bench in a long time, so it was tough on me," he said. "I just sat back and learned from Chad and T.J. about how to prepare for a game. You just can't go out on Sundays and play. You have to understand and know your opponent, and that will make it a lot easier for you."
Houshmandzadeh becomes an unrestricted free agent in February. If the Bengals can't sign him to a long-term deal, they can retain him by tagging him with the "franchise player" designation. They could also allow him to leave in free agency when he hits the open market.
"Of course I'm a little curious," Caldwell said. "That plays a big part in my role next year. But that's not my main focus. I'm just getting ready for next year and working hard in the offseason."
